Whilst photographing birds at a feeding station in Finland this Red Squirrel appeared.
It was a pleasant distraction from the birdlife and provided some amusement as it ran up and over everything in its sight to reach the feeding platform. The ground was a mat of discarded sunflower husks but this Squirrel was able to find some seeds in amongst the husks.
Taken in Finland, well inside the arctic circle, these Redpoll images have had people scratching their heads to confirm the true identity.
Those that know me are well aware that my ID skills are pretty poor, so I am not going to make confident claims about the true ID of either image. In the two images below, I have tried to present similar pictures showing the two species observed, in almost identical positions to help with the identification.

Here is my first picture of a Ruff from this years trip to Norway.
The weather conditions were lousy and I can tell you that the smell from this particular bay was “memorable” to say the least. Just looking at this picture brings back memories of the special aroma and lying down in this stuff was above and beyond the call of duty, even for a hobby. However, that was what was required to get an eye level angle on this bird species and to make myself less obvious as it approached.
