A Great Crested Grebe – shake down…

Here is another image showing Great Crested Grebe behaviour.

The Grebes spend quite a lot of their time under water. This can be for several reasons including feeding, collecting weed for the nest or to use when displaying and also when attacking competing Grebes. Once they have finished diving and decide that it is time to spend some time on the waters surface they shake themselves quite vigorously to remove any excess water.

Here is the shake down caught mid flow. The Grebe rises off the water surface, shakes itself dry a bit like a dog then rests back down on the water again.
